Just wanted to give a shout out to all the 2012 local high school graduates!  You may have had to contend with a landfill on fire but you didn’t have to destroy an evil Mayor!

We’re getting excited for next Saturday’s (the 11th) annual Anime and Manga Festival for teens here at the Iowa City Public Library!  This year we’ll be showing :

• Trigun
• Fairy Tail
• Shattered Angels

There will be lots of food, including candy sushi (of course).  This year we’re super happy to have the help of some of the stylists from local G-Spot Hair Design who will be here to help you craft Anime Hair! So come in cosplay dress!

Teens in grades 7-12 are invited to a marathon showing of the two “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” films back to back on the big screen in Meeting Room A.  on Friday, January 27th.  There will be food and drinks so you can make it through the almost five hours of awesomeness!

Part 1 will start as close to 4:00 p.m. as possible so hurry on down after school.  Part 2 will follow at around 6:45 p.m.  The library is officially closed and locked at 8:00 p.m. so arrange to meet your ride outside, we should be done by 9:00 p.m.

Coffeehouse–Project Art Live Performances Program with the Recliners
Friday, Jan. 20 5:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. at Beadology

Hear some music and support a good cause! Join the Recliners as they play a benefit in the Bead Lab to supply equipment and materials for live performances at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Money raised will buy sheet music and sound equipment. Project Art is committed to providing an environment that promotes healing shaped by a rich dose of art exhibits and performances.

NFL Conference Championship games
Sunday, January 22 on CBS and FOX
I’m not the biggest fan of NFL Football but even I’m going to be watching one of these conference championship games if only for the chance to see some new blood in the Super Bowl. I’ll be cheering for the Ravens (they’ve only been once before) and the 49ers (who haven’t been in since the early 1990s…plus their uniforms are horrible).

AFC: Ravens vs Patriots ‎starts at 2:00 PM on CBS.
NFC: Giants vs 49ers at 5:30 PM on FOX.

30 Rock Returns!
Thursday, January 12th at 7:00 p.m. on NBC
Winter may have officially started on December 22nd, but the snow didn’t arrive until today. School happened regardless of the snow and wind so why not treat yourself tonight; skip the homework and watch some of the best comedy on tv. 30 Rock is back (they promise Community will return later) and Parks and Rec follows. Heck, I’d even say you should stick around for The Office even though that show’s best years are long gone.

For only the 2nd time in 55 years One Book Two Book organizers have made arrangements to run the Hawkeye Express train on the historic CRANDIC railroad.

Flight Skool hip hop dance (bonus day Champloo!)
Monday, January 16, 4pm – 7pm at UAY Youth Center – 355 Iowa Avenue

Flight Skool is Iowa City’s newest young hip-hop dance group, formed in September 2009 in the halls of West High. Their mission is to create a positive reputation for themselves and their peers through participation, performance, and education in hip-dop dance. Dancers rehearse once a week at the UAY Youth Center, where they create original choreography based on popular hip-hop dance and music. Greater Iowa City Dollars for Scholars – Show Choir Concert

Thursday, January 5th at 7:30 p.m. in the West High Auditorium. $3.00 tickets for students

Your $3.00 won’t be wasted!  Proceeds from ticket sales benefit the Greater Iowa City Dollars for Scholars, which awards post-secondary education scholarships to graduates of City, West, Tate, and Regina High Schools.  The concert features West High’s Showtime and Good Time Company and City High’s City Lights and Fourth Avenue Jazz Company.

We’re looking for students in grades 6-8 who like reading nonfiction to join our VOYA book club!  We are participating in the very important VOYA (Voice of Youth Advocates) Nonfiction Honor List review of new books geared towards middle school and junior high school students. We’ll gather a few times a month this fall and winter for review sessions with food and drinks.

The books cover a variety of interesting topics including: technology, nature, sports, poetry, biographies, history, and comics.  Students will help compile a list of nominees for the top nonfiction books of the year; the list is published in VOYA Magazine, which is used by Library professionals in public and school libraries across the country.

Today’s the day to hang out with the  Old Capitol City Roller Girls!  We’ll be meeting in Room A in the library at 2:00 p.m. and walking a block over to the gym at the Robert A. Lee Community Recreation Center.  Staff will be here until 2:10 to get you over there, otherwise feel free to join us at the gym if you’re going to be late!
